Massive Internet growth has depleted the existing pool of 2-byte AS numbers (65,536 numbers in total). As a result, engineers have expanded the AS number space from 2-bytes to 4-bytes, to include over 4 billion AS numbers.

Following a globally coordinated policy, ARIN and all the Regional Internet Registries began allocating 4-byte AS numbers by request in January 2007; January 2009 marked the transition to allocating 4-byte AS numbers by default. To date, some routers still do not support the use of the 4-byte AS numbers.

To help vendors understand how to provide 4-byte AS number support and to help network operators find products that support 4-byte AS numbers, ARIN has set up this wiki. This wiki will allow the community to exchange and share information about 4-byte AS numbers and contribute resources that may assist other community members including users, ISPs, and vendors.
